Another WTF Moment

(Update: Apparently I’ve been un-banned, but again without any reason or notification given. So while this probably should be an issue to drop, I’m just stucking fupid enough to pursue it. After all, the whole point of Banning someone is to curtail bad behavior. But if there’s no indication of WHICH bad behavior, ain’t nuffin gonna get changed. Right?)

Time for me to be grumpy .. primarily because I’m totally confused and slightly pissed off. Why would I be pissed off? Simple … I’m being “punished” for something I did, except I haven’t the slightest clue what it was, I wasn’t informed of any wrongdoing … and once I was told I was being punished, the door was slammed in my face.

Several days ago, I logged into the Second Life Forums to post a reply to Maestro Linden thanking him for taking care of a bug they had in their Server releases. (It was a tiny but annoying thing … IMs from in-world devices to the device owner weren’t being sent to Email when the Owner was offline.) Maestro had posted in the Server Release Forum that they had a fix and it would be pushed out this week. Prior to that, I hadn’t been active on the Forums at all .. hadn’t posted in several days.

But when I tried to post or reply, all the buttons were grayed out. Then I looked up top and found that I could neither send nor read my Private Messages. So again I was like .. WTF? I filed a support ticket.

I had a nice interchange with a Scout (LL Support Person) and supplied additional details and some screenshots of how the Forums looked to me. Then today I received this response to my ticket:

Hello Darrius,

Thank you for your patience. After reviewing your account it appears that our Forum Moderators have blocked your ability to do so due to your activities on the forums.

Thank you,

Izzy Linden

The Ticket was closed too, so I couldn’t reply. But I haven’t the slightest idea why I was blocked. And now I can’t even reply to find out what the heck happened!

*SLAP* BAD BOY! (and the reason you’ve been slapped is none of your business!)

Can anyone explain to me why this makes sense? To punish someone or block their access but not even notify them of the reason? How on EARTH do you expect to fix bad behavior if you don’t even let people know why they’re being punished. So again I say …

  2. WTF indeed! I monitor the forums pretty closely and unless you are posting weird stuff over in Fashion, I would say you are among the most spiritedly polite and positive of posters, at least in Merchants, where I hang out.

  4. @Pamela – Thank you for the compliment. I do try to contribute to the overall benefit rather than just be disruptive (as some others we both know).

@Mav – I wasn’t expecting that my inability to post or reply was due to a Ban either, that’s why I went the route of filing a support ticket AND supplying detailed updates to the very nice CoriR Scout that responded to my ticket. (And let me reiterate .. CoriR Scout was fantastic in their responsiveness and technical acumen.) When I got that response comment from Izzy Linden .. which was totally devoid of any real “meat” such as the WHY I was banned .. I nearly dropped my eye teeth. However I am left with the question that, if I wasn’t really banned and it was just some login snafu, why on Earth would Izzy tell me I was banned?

  6. On the one occasion that my forum access was curtailed, the only thing I was able to see at login was a lovely pink banner telling me that I was banned, with XXXXX minutes remaining. It doesn’t sound to me like you were actually blocked at all.

[…] there are older posts there from Darrius Gothly, which may soon become a collector’s item as Darrius is currently banned from the forums apparently, for crimes unknown to anyone other than the forum moderators. Darrius is a rather lively and […]
