Beating My Head Against The Wall

It’s bad enough that over the years I’ve been living, working and creating in Second Life that I’ve had to do continual battle with the often myopic Decision Makers at Linden Lab, but sometimes I wind up having to push hard against some unfathomable reticence from my fellow Residents.

Important Pricing Changes in VLMVW

There are always two basic perspectives when pricing a new product. They are variously known as “High Price/Low Volume” and the opposite “Low Price/High Volume”. When we first released the VLMVW System that provides our Virtual Landmarks solution for Second Life, we chose to adopt the former pricing structure. But after listening to the feedback from our customers, we have changed pricing models.

Getting Your Delivery Box Right

Selling your products in Second Life is a surprisingly complicated process that involves many different activities. From making sure you have all the proper parts in the box, to setting the proper permissions, to naming things and labeling things so they make sense, it’s a sometimes tedious process of double- and triple-checking mundane details.

It’s long been our belief at DGP4SL that the real purpose of computers is to help us poor hapless humans do things better and with less error (and more speed when possible). Because computers are tireless and don’t get bored or bleary-eyed, they make excellent detail checkers. Most everyone is familiar with common spell-checkers; some folks are even experienced with grammar checkers. But very few of us are familiar with other forms of automated detail checkers.

Virtual Landmark Solutions – Virtual SLurls

A fairly large number of Second Life® Residents are also sellers on the SL Marketplace®. They will take something they’ve built, made or scripted and place it for sale on the Marketplace. They will include product pictures, a description and various other bits of information about the product that will help potential customers make the decision to purchase.

An important but under-utilized part of the Product Listing is a field known as the “SLurl”. The purpose of the SLurl field is to direct potential customers to an in-world location where they can see the product “in the wild” … in other words, see it in-person and perhaps test it out for themselves. This is most often used for things like Structures, Furnishings, Landscaping, Decorations, Utility Devices; in short anything that really needs to be seen to be appreciated. By following the link in the SLurl field, the potential customer can gain a first-hand appreciation for the product and its unique qualities.

Another VLM Gizmo – The Location Beacon

We recently added a new product to the DG Products for Second Life line called “Virtual Landmarks for Virtual Worlds” or VLMVW. The power and flexibility of the VLMVW system provides a number of valuable advantages to Store Owners and Merchants that operate In-World Store locations. VLMs also have a number of advantages for those that run exhibits, events and any type of in-world function that depends on “Foot Traffic”. A full description of the VLMVW System is contained in our previous blog post “Time To Push Second Life Forward – Virtual Landmarks”.

Time To Push Second Life Forward – Virtual Landmarks

When Second Life debuted on the Internet Stage in the early 90’s, it pushed quite a few boundaries of technical capability that had previously been the subject of experimentation, but had not yet been available to the “Common Person” in any reasonable form. Second Life introduced people to the concept of living a complete and deep life totally within the confines of a Virtual World. Suddenly the concept exploded from the labs and back rooms of college research groups and into the hands of most anyone able to connect to the Internet.

But even though most of SL was a technical leap into future concepts, there were a number of things that remained shackled to the past. Even though it was possible for anyone to fly without the aid of a vehicle, and even though it was possible for anyone to instantly teleport to anywhere in the Virtual World, the mechanism available to remember those places was mired in the past using a technique that was out-dated before it was even released.

Are You Giving Stuff Away For Free?

It’s not something we mind doing in most cases, giving stuff away for free. Loss-leaders, Freebie Promotional Items, and the like are common and useful marketing devices we all employ from time to time. But when the SL Marketplace chooses to give our stuff away for free, and especially when it chooses to give away very expensive stuff, it can be both disconcerting and very damaging.

We put our heads together and decided to do something to help combat this problem. I’ve written before about a product that I first discovered and then joined up with called the “iGlom RDS System”. Originally designed to let customers obtain redeliveries of their SLM purchases without needing to contact the Merchant directly, the RDS System has grown over time to include comprehensive sales reports, full record-keeping of sales and other advanced functions that are missing from the features offered by the Marketplace.

The new feature, an enhancement of the basic and very simple “OnRez” scripts available from various sources, combines the ability to detect and record rez, wear and attach events for your products with the full sales records of the RDS. Because it uses a database to store the events, it also provides historical data, the ability to capture and report multiple events, and correlate product purchases with customer usage.

We’re always adding products to our growing catalog. Today we’re happy to announce our newest release .. the DG Omega Flyer. A member of the very popular DG Flyer series, the DG Omega Flyer uses the same favor-winning technology for the most rapid and reliable Teleporters available in Second Life. Just like the DG Flyer, DG Flyer ST and the DG InstaFlyer, the DG Omega Flyer is able to teleport parties of up to six avatars at one time. The first person to “Sit” on the Omega Flyer becomes the “Driver” and will be shown the destination menu. Another five avatars may then sit on the Omega Flyer and teleport along with the Driver.

Priced at L$375, the DG Omega Flyer is available from the SL Marketplace or at our In-World Teleporter store. If you need a teleporter to fit your Greek or Ancient World themed decor then the DG Omega Flyer is the best choice you can make.

New Product News and an Update

Our time away from the public eye wasn’t totally wasted. (Although laying around watching educational TV shows isn’t exactly “waste”, it sure isn’t immediately productive either.) We are pleased and proud that over time we’ve gathered a cadre of “Idea People” that are excellent at thinking up new gadgets, identifying needs and problems in their own use of Second Life, and willing to share those ideas and suggestions with us.  When we are presented with a new idea or obstacle, we do what’s only natural for us … we invent a tool or device to address it.
