I tend to have rather sharp-edged opinions on things. As a result sometimes I make people angry. One particular person I’ve successfully angered for quite a few years is a fellow Second Life Resident only with a lot more time “alive” here. We both have pretty good word skills .. and we disagree with each other on almost everything. Sometimes vehemently. Apparently I’ve recently earned another helping of ire. Have a look:

Scratchin’ My Head … Again

I just got a private message from a Moderator on the Second Life Forums. The message was to notify me that I had violated the Community Standards by using profanity in a post. Now what confuses me is that the Forums have an active “Profanity Filter” that converts all banned words into scrambled letters and asterisks. And I didn’t engage in “creative character games” to avoid said filter either. So what did I do that the filter allowed … but the Moderator didn’t?

Here’s the full message, including my original post, in screenshot format:

At any rate, here I am again … scratchin’ mah haid and wunnerin’ …

(Update: Apparently I’ve been un-banned, but again without any reason or notification given. So while this probably should be an issue to drop, I’m just stucking fupid enough to pursue it. After all, the whole point of Banning someone is to curtail bad behavior. But if there’s no indication of WHICH bad behavior, ain’t nuffin gonna get changed. Right?)

Time for me to be grumpy .. primarily because I’m totally confused and slightly pissed off. Why would I be pissed off? Simple … I’m being “punished” for something I did, except I haven’t the slightest clue what it was, I wasn’t informed of any wrongdoing … and once I was told I was being punished, the door was slammed in my face.

WTF?

Exactly!

A post on the new Second Life Community Forums triggered a thought chain earlier, and after letting it stew for a few hours, I decided it was time to pose the above question. The question is somewhat rhetorical, but also in the same light very troubling. There is a very evident “shift” in the underlying motives of today’s Social Media … and from what I see, that shift is most troubling.
