When I first began participating in the Second Life Forums, the one behavior that most infuriated me in the way Linden Lab went about their jobs was to make massive, sometimes world-shaking changes to the Second Life platform seemingly without the least bit of consultation or consideration with the end-user community. They would release massive changes in the customer’s operation of the product, frequently without the least bit of notice or announcement about the changes. People would log on, run into problemsĀ or flat-out roadblocks to the way they’d always used SL .. and seldom could they find any explanation about the change anywhere on Linden Lab’s web sites. If there has been an albatross around the Lab’s neck, it has always been that bull-headed habit of doing whatever they damn well please without the least bit of consideration for how it affected the people that use and PAY FOR the Second Life product.

Fixing the Unbroken

Well they’re at it again. Repeating a pattern that seems to be solidly entrenched in the Corporate Personality at Linden Lab, CommerceTeam Linden is readying the release of an update to the Second Life Transaction History resource. It wasn’t broken of course, but that’s all the more reason for them to invest their precious programmer time in changing it and making it incompatible with what has been working perfectly for years.

It’s About Communication .. and Trust

Yesterday I was startled and dismayed to find that the HTML web pages generated for each Parcel in Second Life had been changed. As I wrote in my post on this issue (Another Major SL Search Borking), the net result was that all of my SEO Tools had been irrevocably broken. Imagine my surprise when I looked today to find that all of my SEO Tools are working again. After checking my email to see if anyone at Linden Lab had seen fit to notify me about the goings on, I was of course not surprised to find nothing.

Throwing the Rod a Bone

When Rod Humble joined Linden Lab some three years ago, there was a lot of hype, type and snipe going on as to what this would mean for Second Life, what it would do to Linden Lab, and what new monkey wrench he was going to beat us all into submission with. Since his initial days of open communication, periodic sightings and a few stabs at trying to make some positive changes, before long the newest sacrificial lamb to sit in the CEO chair regained his footing along the well-worn path. He went silent, stopped showing up places, stopped being the communicative spirit we had all hoped he would.

And then the crap started happening .. all over the place.

Shooting Down a ToS Theory

There is a theory floating around that provides one reason behind Linden Lab’s recent rights grab as embodied in the new Terms of Service released on August 15th, 2013. That theory states that:

Linden Lab is aware of all the stolen content floating around in Second Life, and as a result has been embroiled in some messy and expensive legal actions as an innocent third-party and as an active litigant. Because of this past experience, they have chosen to take the reins by means of the ToS Rights section so that they can properly manage and control lawsuits and help protect their platforms from the harm caused by stolen content.

This past Saturday saw a very informative and very helpful presentation put on by UCCSL and including several real-life attorneys that have actual functional background in Intellectual Property Rights, Copyrights, Trademarks and Patents. Nerfing Second Life Microbusiness

(According to This Blog Post, the problems with the Process Credit system of Second Life have now been resolved. If you are still seeing a delay greater than those specified in the post then you should file a support case and hope they get it resolved el Pronto.)


Fairly early in the maturation process of Linden Lab’s Second Life software platform, the management at Linden Lab decided it would be really neat if people using SL could actually turn their contributions to the platform into actual cash money. Users were already able to exchange the in-game tokens called “Linden Dollars” for copies of their virtual products, but LL spotted and then implemented a method to convert those tokens into outside-the-walls (meaning Real Life) cash money.

Dancing or Boxing?

In the very beginning days of Second Life, the founder Philip Rosedale worked to promote a sense of kinship among the people populating it. He seemed to have realized that people had to feel as if they were a mutual participant, a willing worker bee striving together with the management to make this new world work. Granted, the initial efforts had a lot of issues that needed to be recognized and overcome. Even so, Philip exhibited behavior that made people feel like he saw them, saw their work, and saw their necessity in the success of the enterprise.
